The John Sevier Chapter TNSSAR celebrates its 90th birthday on October 16, 2015. On Friday morning, October 16, 1925 at the Patten Hotel, an organizational meeting took place. Twelve local members attended this important meeting (A.F. Meehan; T.L. Montague; Dr. Dunbar Newell; J.T. Hill; N.H. Grady; C.S. Stewart; F.A. Hahn; C.T. Jones; Henry Bond; Thomas S. Myers; Summerfield K. Johnston; and William Keen). Also in attendance were many officials of the National Society including the NSSAR President General. Compatriot Augustus F Meehan was elected as the first Chapter President. The Chapter chose the name “John Sevier” in honor of Colonel John Sevier, who led a group of militia who fought the “Last Battle of the Revolution” on Lookout Mountain in September 1782. Colonel Sevier (later Brigadier General) led a group of “Over the Mountain” men in the Battle of Kings Mountain in October 1780. Sevier was elected the First Governor of the State of Tennessee in 1796. Many of the leading citizens of the area have been members of the Chapter. Some well known members were Admiral Richard E. Byrd; Senator Estes Kefauver; and Harry T. Burn, who served as President General of the National Society in 1963. Members of John Sevier Chapter have served as President of the Tennessee Society of the SAR down through the years. Chapter members that have held this office are: 1930-A.F.
